Day 3 - Dodge Work

Today I started actually working on the code for the dodge system and implementing it into my game. I got a copy of it from Howie so I could actually work on it. He helped me understand the code a lot better and how to make a lot of it. I am learning a lot about how things work and how coding in general works. I created a simple dodge mechanic by making the players sprite change and moving him along the x-axis. When I go home for the weekend I am going to try and make it more advanced so that it might allow you to only work against the collision layers of the Zombies or maybe it will just make the player or Zombies solid=false. For now while I'm learning this was great progress but as I get better I hope to update everything I have done earlier.

In the picture I used the dodge mechanic to jump out of the other 2 zombies.

Day 2 - Lights and Sand

Today in computers I watched a short tutorial on how to set up lighting in game maker. Now that I have a copy of it, it made it a lot easier to put to use the knowledge I've gained. I made some use of the lighting to make it so my game has a night. With this I am closer to being able to help with the actual game. I also did some work with photoshop, Jake teaching me advanced methods of doing things like changing the opacity to make the sandstorm look a lot better. Tomorrow I will try and finish the sandstorm and input it into my game before giving it to Jake or Justin for the game. I will also be watching another tutorial to learn more about the different code I will need for things like room change and maybe combat.

Day 2 - Game Maker

Today I finished the tutorial on particles and now I know a bit more on how they work. I was also watching Justin and Ty, which taught me a lot on how to use game maker and how to be more efficient with the things that I do. I got a copy of game maker from Howie so now I can practice the tutorials. I tried to put some of the things I learnt to use by making a very simple game where you just move the player around in horizontal and vertical directions while floating around a castle wall, I like to call it Kappa Castle. I hope to be able to be of more use to the group by the end of the week, but I will continue to learn more and more so I can make the game a lot better.

Day 1 - Tutorials

This class I began on working on the game with Justin, Jake and the others. I watched 2 tutorials, one on the basics of game maker and one on how to make and use particles in game maker. It was slightly confusing at first but the more I got into it the easier it was to understand the tutorial and I think that with a bit more practice I can jump on in. Jake and Justin have been great for helping me by showing me what they're doing and telling me how I can help them with the game. As of right now I have been assigned to making particles for the game such as sand storms or rain so we can have a much better aesthetic feel to the game. I have been notified by Jake that I will be doing lighting next so I hope that one of the tutorials has information on that.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Wrap-up

Today in planet base I went through with my plans to eliminate my colony, there was no hope. Please do not follow my example. While I did that I figured out how to get more milestones, and that was wild ride. I lost plenty of colonists but I achieved the goals I set milestone-wise. In my opinion the best thing to do is get an oxygen generator, water-creator, an airlock and then solar panel with a power storage. Those will set you up to succeed, and from there you can go into things like a bio-dome and a mine. The game is very hard if you do not do things perfectly, your mistakes WILL cause your people to die, usually from starvation or dehydration. This game is a lot of fun and you are able to do a lot of things and everyone can play differently after the start of the game. I would recommend it to fans of The Sims, Sim City and probably Civilization.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Review Day 2 Part 2

Today I got little accomplished in Planet Base. I ran into many problems like food shortages, power shortages and sandstorms. Three of my people have starved to death and it is all my fault, I may be going insane after today. I have built a lab and made vitro-meat but they decay at a rapid rate and my people seem to be very dumb, they will not build spares and refuse to turn my ore into metal. When you play I hope you get people who will actually put an effort into surviving. I would have to recommend getting a huge source of food and energy first with lots of water, or the game will be very stressful. I found myself at times wishing that the meteors had hit a little bit closer or that my oxygen generator  "accidentally" ran out of power. Trade ships have come by and helped a bit with my food problems but, now I've run into a new problem, I have nothing to trade.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Review Day 2 Part 1

Yesterday in planet base I made my colony. I started out with the basics ; an oxygen generator, a water generator, an airlock and a solar panel. After that I got more in depth by placing some wind turbines of varying sizes and some energy storage. From there I went into doing things like making a canteen and dorm then a bio-dome to better my peoples lives, like I'm bettering yours with these posts. After all of those I went and made a factory so I could make more robots. Now, I needed more robots because I was running out of spares due to two sandstorms near the beginning of the game. I also built a landing pad and before I stopped for the day I was getting colonists like crazy. I would not recommend going by what I did because I barely survived, GET A SICK BAY, it will save your life ( no pun intended ). The beginning planet has a high risk of sandstorms and those tear up your colonists and robots. Everything else I would recommend although you should be weary of you resource stocks and make sure your energy is sustainable if  you have wind  problems. Today I am going to go more into the path of robots and fixing them up, then I will take care of the small things like sustainable power, water and more beds.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Review

So today I played the actual Planet Base game and I had to make a lot of hard decisions and they hopefully worked out for the best. I started off on the standard route and everything was going fine, until I had to make actual decisions. I decided to skip the sick-bay and just make a mine and factory and that really did not go well. I got hit with two sandstorms and that hit my Workers hard, they were sick. Then I ran out of metal because you need workers to produce it. When I was out of metal I couldn't make a power storage so I ran out of power at night. I did a couple of things to bring it back though like destroying a building and stopping the mine. When I finished I was gaining colonists left and right and I even got a couple of Milestones (Expansion and Self-Sustaining) for getting getting more people and keeping myself alive. The progression went from very easy to very hard after I made my mine. I started to build bigger things like a large windmill and a factory so I used up a lot of bio-plastic. Workers are very needed in this game and due to the injuries from the sandstorm I could not build anything for a while. I was desperate form metal just so I could stay alive, when I got a trader with metal. What I learned was you need to know what you have, what you need and what your limits are.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Preview PART 2

The tutorial of Planet Base differs from the walk-through I detailed in my reveal post in a couple of ways. To start the tutorial gives more tips to help you do things faster and efficiently while the walk-through gives a bit more personal analysis of the start of the game. If I was doing a walk-through I would have liked to try to explain things a bit more like telling you that you can hit (+) to speed up the construction of things and you can look at all of your buildings by pressing (TAB). The menus are fairly easy to use because the buttons are self explanatory. The buildings look like themselves in the construction menu and the resources also look like themselves. (The game has some cool tricks in it like pressing (Page Down) in  the beginning menu lets you change the background of it.)

My First Impression of Planet Base : Preview PART 1

In the tutorial of Planet Base you learn how to set up the basic colony. You must get all your basic resources out of the way like air, power and water, and then you can get started on building advanced structures. To be able to survive, the tutorial teaches you how to progress on your planet of choice and how to do some basic tricks to keep the game from slowing down. In Planet Base the beginning progression should always be the same, you must get your resources out of the way. After doing that you can get into more advanced things like making a med-bay to heal your colonist or setting up landing pads to gain more colonists.

My First impression of Planet Base : Reveal PART 2

A more detailed look at the beginning of the game was done by OfficialStuffPlus in which he described and showed how to start of in Planet Base. You start the game by choosing your planet (you can only choose 1 at the start) and these planets are unlocked by achieving milestone/goals in the game. In his preview video he built up his resources and colony while detailing the steps on how to progress. He also illustrated the use of the help menus and how you could use them to better help yourself in the first part of the game. In the video he stated that you have no real goal in the game except to keep the colony alive and build up your outpost. From his preview we can see that the game menu is very easy to use and we can access all we need with very little effort. For more information please view the video linked above.

My First Impression of Planet Base : Reveal PART 1

From what I can see Planet Base is a game not unlike The Sims or Sim City. It seems to be a planet survival simulator where you have to build a colony and keep them alive through randomized disasters and attacks from alien lifeforms. The players goal is to build up a massive colony and "conquer" the planet. From what I can see the game goes on until all of your colonists are killed.
The game makes you build up buildings and create a certain amount of resources per colonist while letting you build autonomous robots to help farm your resources and create more structures.

Friday Post

This week we did work in microsoft publisher. It very easy to use and it felt very nice doing work in it. It had a lot of things to make my postcard creation simple and quick. The interface felt very nice and the options it gave really helped make my project better. The project was quite easy and I felt like I learned a lot about how publisher works and how I could improve on my microsoft publisher skills.
